A new breakthrough on the technology of methanol gasoline in China

In 1975, Switzerland put forward that methanol can be a substitute fuel for automobiles and established national Switzerland Methanol Development company (SMAB). Early from our country’s “The Sixth Five-Year Plan”, Shanxi--the province of abundant coal resources, started pilot research on methanol gasoline of M5~15 and M85~100, which is known as the earlier stage or the so-called first generation of methanol gasoline.

Use from blending to catalytic combustion

      The prominent feature of the first-generation methanol gasoline is the direct application in low-proportion blending, such as M5~15. For high-proportion such as M85-100, the typical example is the methanol automobile produced by American Fort Automobile Corporation in 1995, which could use 85% methanol mixed with 15% gasoline. But it still belongs to the mixture application but changes a methanol engine.
      It is known to us that the heating value of methanol is only half of gasoline. So when mentioning the increase of methanol proportion, the first response occurring to people is to change the engine and increase the oil supply. As for this, it has been bothering our experts and scholars.
      In 1993, China became a net-import country on oil again. In 2006, Chinese consumption of crude oil was 322 million tons, which included 145 million tons by importing. The oil reliance on foreign countries was 43%. Our innovative researchers started a deep research on ethanol fuel. Through 3 years’ arduous work, they carried out a 3-month road experiment at Handan, Hebei province from August to November in 1997. Adopted the catalytic combustion theory, the second generation methanol gasoline successfully passed the test. In 1998, it applied for the Chinese Patent of Invention and was formally authorized in 2002(Picture One). After numerous automobiles’ tests, compared with the first generation methanol gasoline, the methanol gasoline by adding a catalytic combustion additive has three breakthroughs:
      First, it achieves the increasing proportion of methanol application from 15%~60%;
      Second, it achieves the almost same fuel consumption as gasoline;
      Third, it achieves the direct use without any change on automobiles. And it also can be mix-used with normal gasoline or ethanol gasoline, or re- blended with others.

The Direct use of M85 methanol gasoline without change on automobiles

On the mentioning of high-proportion M85~M100 methanol gasoline, we often see such report: “only can be used after reconstructing the engine or on particular methanol automobiles”. At least so far, few people believe that the current automobiles can be put into direct use without any reconstructions. However, the M85 methanol gasoline produced by Nanjing Julan Science&Technology Company meets the above mentioned requirements. And furthermore, the content of its catalytic combustion additive is only 0.5%, which cost in 1 ton is less than RMB100. The substitution rate of this technology has reached 1.6:1, superior to 1.7~1.8:1 of “reconstructing the engine or use particular methanol automobiles”.
